Art 1020

Reflective Writing-

When entering this class I had no idea how to draw anything other than a simple stick figure. The things I have learned this semester are some of the most valuable things one can learn about art. Things such as negative space, continuous line, left-right modes of our brains, proportions, angles and how to add proper contrast to any picture are just a few of the things we have learned.

In this specific piece of art I did this semester we were taught the importance of negative space. We didn't have to worry about details of the person since we would just block them out so it allowed our brains to focus on everything but what we're used to seeing in our symbol system. I was really proud of how this piece turned out because it was one of my first "aha" moments where I knew I could do more than a stick figure. Ever since this assignment I have looked at the negative space in every little thing I draw because it helps to get proportions and the correct lines in my artwork.

The other requirement of this piece was to create an expressive background. We had many different options of materials to use and we're free to do whatever we want in order to make the person who was blacked out go along with the background. Since the person I drew seemed as if she was free and in a relax mood which lead to the bright red and pink colors and I didn't want a sense of consistency so I scattered colors all throughout the pages, I really like how they turned out with the tissue paper and how I was able to really see what the purpose of the project was just from a negative space drawing of a person in my class.

Negative space is only one of the things that we learned throughout this semester, all of the other little essential things that are needed to make a drawing come to life we're taught in this course and are things I will definitely use in the future. I can't describe how much I learned in this class compared to what I came in knowing. I always thought art was just a gift that some people had, now I know that if you want to be an artist it just takes time, practice and the essentials that this Art 1020 class taught me this semester.
